Researchers had suspected for a number of years now cheetahs and pumas were related and shared a common ancestry. This seems to be confirmed in this latest discovery. Cheetahs migrated from North America to Africa 100,000 years ago

Some fossils of giant cheetahs or cheetah-like animals had already been discovered in North America, miracinonyx jubatus and miracinonyx trumani evolved there to catch pronghorn, an antelope-like herbivore. Whether those cats were cheetahs or closer to the puma remains debatable: only their fossilized skeletons have been found so far, without the fur and soft tissues which may have helped in a better understanding on how they were related to cheetahs and pumas.
