Possibly. It seems the Europeans were the only one to confuse this animal with the jackal because I remember reading that, according to the sangoma (Zulu shaman) Credo Mutwa, the Zulus call Sirius the "Star of the Wolf" while this animal was considered for a long time as not living in Africa!
